Recently been working with Brian at Panacea in Waynesville NC expand and rebrand his roasting and cafe business. We are starting with this new logo. Next up is website that includes the ability to order beans online from the roasting company. Brian is an amazing roaster and has a great product (coffee lovers take note). I am excited to be working with him and watching everything evolve.

Nonprofits • Fundraising • Relationships
There was an interesting story last week on NPR about Nonprofits and the use of social media for fundraising. A point was brought up that I have often wondered. It was the issue of long term relationships and whether or not they are being created using these new tools. Having worked in fundraising in the past, the idea of creating long term relationships with donors was always a priority among the people I worked with. How will social media change the way organizations will integrate the contacts they obtain from outlets such as facebook/twitter/kickstarter/etc and cultivating those long term relationships needed for successful fundraising? The story also talked about the Pepsi Refresh Everything challenges Pepsi started with a huge buzz on superbowl sunday. Is it genius marketing or is pepsi really interested these small businesses and community organizations which they are helping raise money for? I voted daily for an old Hoosier acquaintance that recently won a grant to start their craft store and education center in Indy. It was awesome to watch how it all played out and kept my attention daily with voting, but once it was done I was gone. It will be interesting to see how the future of fundraising plays out with advent of all these new tools.

What?
A sign that recently went up in my neighborhood. Had high hopes when I saw the building being cleared out over the winter. Then this went up. Made me think of this video my friend posted last year.

America Is F*cked…….(Graphically at least) from Jess Gibson on Vimeo.
Social Networking and Fundraising

Last week the co-founder of Facebook announced a new endeavor that creates a social networking site aimed to help people find causes and nonprofit organizations that they care about. The project is called JUMO and is set to launch later this year.

How will this affect fundraising? How will this affect Facebook, since a good amount of non-profits and volunteer ran organizations are there using it for the same purpose.
My hopes is that they will somehow it will integrate with the existing Facebook interface, or at least allow FB users to use the same profile and/or login. I think some get turned off with these new endeavors if it means another login/password to remember.
Is Bartering the New Currency?

In the past I had some bad luck with bartering so for years I only “bartered” with good friends. Recently did some interesting work for three clients in the neighborhood. First was helping the most awesome pet sitter in Asheville, West Asheville Dog Walking and Pet Sitting. The next one was helping my favorite coffee shop in Waynesville, Panacea, set up some files right for a vendor. And then most recently, rack cards for photoghrapher Jen Lepkowski. All were perfect experiences. Its such a pleasure to do this type of work for people who might normally not be able to hire someone and have to cut corners in order to do marketing. They seem to appreciate the process and are always willing to listen to new ideas. More projects are in the works. Cant wait!
Two months…
Wow, over two months since the last post. Lots has happened. In August I turned 35. I was laid off due to the growing budget issues in the state of North Carolina. Doing some networking in Asheville and WNC. Learning MySQL. Taking classes. And being a stay at home dad a couple days of the week (my favorite days)
In that two+ month span, an even bigger life milestone happened. My son Hollis turned one. I can’t believe its been a whole year. As cliche as it sounds, on that day in October 2008 my life was changed in an amazing way. Heres the dude himself on that day, overwhelmed by the awesomess of lots of new toys….

For Jonathan II
A Youtube find. This video is from a release on my now defunct record label TGVM. This project, which took over 2 years to compile and produce, was entitled For Jonathan. It was a double cd featuring the music by artists such as The Album Leaf, Unwed Sailor, Mikael Jorgensen (Wilco, Movere Workshop), Tarental, Her Space Holiday, and more. Each song was written for a film Chris Bennett shot of a close friend, Jonathan Hicks as a requiem, who at the time was being treated for a rare bone cancer. This cancer would eventually take his life. What came of this was 18 different “soundtracks” to the footage, each different and interesting because of the complex subject matter they were writing the music to. Here is Unwed Sailor’s take on it. For Jonathan : Double CD : TGVM06 : 1100 pressed : Released January 2006

Accross the street from our favorite breakfast joint, Rosettas Kitchen. Taken on my favorite camera, a Cannon AEII, strangely bought at a yard sale on the other side of the cemetary for $20. Lots of great walks after biscuits and gravy were had here.
